Essential Eligibility Criteria for Kayak & Standup Paddleboard Rentals and Tours

At 41° North, we welcome individuals of all backgrounds and abilities. To ensure safety for all participants and staff, the following Essential Eligibility Criteria (EEC) apply to all rental clients and tour participants. These criteria are based on the physical and cognitive abilities needed to safely and independently participate in paddle sports on open water.

Participants must be able to:

  1. Independently wear and maintain a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket (PFD) at all times while on the water.

  2. Independently manage personal care and mobility in the launch area and while on the water, or provide their own personal assistant at their own expense.

  3. Follow verbal and/or visual instructions to the extent necessary to maintain safety for themselves and others.

  4. Breathe independently without the use of medical devices that would restrict mobility or pose a risk in a water-based environment.

  5. Remain seated (kayak) or balanced (SUP) independently, or with the use of adaptive equipment provided by the participant, to ensure safety and stability on the water.

  6. Exit the watercraft and return to shore independently or with minimal assistance in case of capsize or emergency.

  7. Tolerate up to 2 hours of moderate physical activity, including sun exposure, changing weather, and possible immersion in water.

  8. Respond appropriately to changes in conditions and emergencies, including the ability to self-rescue or accept assistance.
